WHAT YOU CAN DO...
As a parent, educator or caregiver, we try our best to raise our children to become happy, independent, and responsible adults. Typically, the focus is on career, but needs to extend further. Teaching our kids social and environmental responsibility is a must. Here are our tips to raise an #ecowarrior:
Tip 1: Teach your child not to litter and help them understand why is key. It's more than just keeping our landscape pretty, it's about ensuring our trash is properly disposed of... avoiding entry in our waterways or in the mouths of small animals.
Tip 2: Take part in park, beach, school or neighbourhood clean-up events. Not only does it reinforce the message of not littering, but it also demonstrates how personal action can make a difference. No #clean-up event in your area? Try organising one of your own
Tip 3: Brushing teeth, washing hands, taking a shower... these are all potential areas where water usage can get a little out of hand. However, teaching your child how to turn off the faucet when it's not in use or to be consciences of wasting water helps them to become eco-responsible beings.
Tip 4: Helping our kids get into the habit of turning off lights, games or TVs when not in use is another way to #raiseanecowarrior. So much energy and harmful emissions from power plants can be saved just by doing so.
Tip 5: We all have a choice to be environmentally responsible, a choice to stand up for what you believe in, and a choice to help #raiseanecowarrior. When we teach our children that they can make a difference, however small their action, we set them up to be #ecoresponsible individuals.
Tip 6:It's saddening the amount of trash produced just from the contents of our little one's school lunches or snacks. However, there is an alternative approach. Pack a #resuable #bottle, use #reuablecontainers, avoid snacks that are wrapped in individual plastic packaging and explain why it's important. This helps #raiseanecowarrior.
Tip 7: Our children watch how we shop; the products we choose and the decision process behind our choice. Do we choose purely on price, or convenience, or do we challenge ourselves to avoid unnecessary plastic packaging? Demonstrating that #plasticfree shopping is possible and why it's important helps to #raiseanecowarrior. Their shopping habits are forming. Teach them to #shopsmart and plastic free.
Tip 8: Recycling is not the solution to our #plasticproblem, but it does help. Teaching our children how to #recycle and making it a daily action helps to #raiseanecowarrior. Whether it's paper, plastic, glass, metal or even unwanted clothes and furniture, lead the way and show how to properly find a new life for these items.
Tip 9: Did you know that about 50% of the plastic we use is only used once and then thrown away? Plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic cutlery.. all these items can be replaced with reusable alternatives. Teach your child about single-use plastic and how to find sustainable alternatives.
Tip 10: "Just think through your actions and the cause and effect of waste and pollution and careless neglect." A quote from our children's book and the most valuable tip to #raiseanecowarrior. Show your child through your own actions. #bethechange
